PEOPLE AND PLANET

For our staff, we show we care in a very tangible way by taking everyone along the Twypack journey, by providing opportunities and preparing staff for career growth, and by finding solutions for the challenges resulting from a business with a seasonal reality and geographically located far from town.

Twypack positively impacts the local economy through seasonal and permanent job creation, skills development and personal growth.  We do not make use of labour brokers, but rather handle all recruitment, selection and training ourselves. Some highlights of our commitment to developing each staff member to his/her full potential:

  • We believe in upskilling our people. We provide training to raise the employment profile of our people. Staff learn beneficial critical skills, like computer and office skills, or becoming machine operators and technicians. Thorough induction into the packing environment (regulatory knowledge and soft skills) encourages retention and low staff turnover.
  • Learnerships further upskill and widen the scope of employability of employees.
  • Monthly site visits by health practitioners create access to wellness and health checks, and chronic medicine. A medical doctor visits our packhouse on a weekly basis as part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring the health and wellbeing of employees.
  • Transport for seasonal workers is subsidised by 41%, while permanent workers benefit from free accommodation (only contributing Rates & Taxes).
  • Worker committees and structures for health & safety, social & ethics, and skills development, ensure free and fair representation and contribute to an equitable, inclusive, diverse and empowered workforce.

Our Corporate Social Investment community involvement includes regular fruit donations to various deserving institutions in the area.

Sustainability for a secure future

For us, sustainability isn’t simply something required in terms of accreditations or compliances. It helps shape how we do business.

Some of our initiatives include:

  • paper and plastic recycling in conjunction with Lowveld Waste,
  • a fully functional wastewater recycling plant repurposes water for irrigation usage.

To power our packhouse sustainably, we have invested in solar energy solutions, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Our 264-kw solar system is supported by a 120 kVA battery system. In addition, to ward off any loadshedding disruptions, we have 1.1 MVA generators as backup.
